The final fixture in the Essex Cross Country League took place on Saturday at Gloucester Park in Basildon. Despite some changes to the course, runners still had to take on the notoriously big hill with the men coming off worse scaling it twice on each lap from different angles as well as negotiating an extremely steep downhill section. The course was water logged in places and very muddy.

Halstead fielded a full ladies team with Rachael Roughan, unchallenged all season, first back for the club in 36th position. Anna Bambridge has also had a great first season finishing in 65th position with Wendy Carter chasing her down in 68th. Nicole Smith completed the team in 89th. The ladies finished 10th on the day and second from bottom of the table at the end of the season meaning they are relegated to Division 2. On a positive note the Vet Women were 12th out of 23 teams.

Wes Atkins put in a strong performance to finish his Essex League season in 56th position. Jon Greenley ensured Wes wasn’t the only Halstead male runner toughing it out to finish in 118th position. There were 3 clubs in Division 1 who fielded incomplete men’s teams of only 2 runners instead of the necessary 6 required to score. Halstead men were 11th on the day but bottom of the table at the end of the season meaning they are also relegated to Division 2.
