It was a beautiful morning for the second race in the 53-12 Cross Country League with bright sunshine and a slight chill in the air. The venue for the fixture was East Newhall Farm in Harwich with a change of race route from previous years meaning runners had an uphill start before navigating a succession of fields. Despite Saturday’s rain the ground was still firm underfoot with several Halstead Road Runners seeing improvements in their finish times and positions.
Wesley Atkins (31st) and Jim Clark (51st) continued to dominate the scoring team with Nathan Roulson putting in a strong performance in 54th. Tom Porter (71st), Ivan Filchev (77th) and Rob Frost (87th) completed the scorers. Steve May wasn’t far behind in 90th. The remaining men were Stewart Ellis (101st), Simon Humphrey (106th), Don English (127th), Richard Tiller (154th) and Andy Carter (164th). Phil Jeffries pushed through the pack showing a marked improvement in only his second cross country race to finish in 186th. Similarly Dan Roughan was 10 minutes quicker, also in his second race, finishing in 189th. The men finished 2nd in Pool B.
The ladies faced tough competition from a strong home team. However, Rachael Roughan finished just outside the top 10 in 11th position with Mel Candler (22nd) and Leigh-Anne Porter completing the scorers (43rd). Lorraine Garnham (53rd) and Nicole Smith (54th) finished in succession with Treena Harrington closing the ranks in 64th position. The ladies finished 3rd meaning Halstead finished 3rd overall and remain 3rd in Pool B.
Elsewhere Caroliena Cameron stayed off the roads to do the Elmstead Market Trail Half Marathon. She was 4th overall and 2nd lady in 2 hours 6 minutes knocking over 13 minutes off the time she previously ran the race.
