The Halstead & Essex Marathon organised locally by members of Halstead Road Runners has been voted the 3rd best UK Marathon in a recent UK Runners World Poll. The marathon has consistently been voted inside the top 10 over recent years and has once again out performed the iconic London Marathon and all other UK City marathons.
The poll is based on votes from readers of the UK’s largest running magazine ‘Runners World‘. What makes this achievement even more special is that the entire event, now in its 21st year, is organised solely by members of Halstead Road Runners. Keith Thorogood Race Director said ‘to claim 3rd place is just amazing, we’ve worked so hard over the past few years and pride our marathon on it’s personal touches and friendly atmosphere, for that to be recognised in such a way is very special and to have beaten all of the city marathons including London, well…’.
The annual 26.2 mile event, with a course record of 2hrs:29mins, attracts an array of both elite club runners and first time fun runners. This years race, on May 10th, sees a change of course, taking in the villages of Alphamstone, Pebmarsh and Colne Engaine before returning to race HQ at Halsteads Leisure Centre on Colne Road. Club Chairman Del Harrington said ‘I’m delighted by the award, the event really puts Halstead on the map and attracts a lot to people to the town for the event, years of hard work has paid off, it’s such an honour for a small club such as ours’
All proceeds from the event are donated to local charities at an annual presentation evening. Last years events saw a total of £6,500+ given to local Halstead Charities.
This years event takes place at 10am Sunday 10th May 2015, starting at Halstead Leisure Centre. (Pictured ‘a delighted Keith Thorogood)
