The Great Barrow Challenge of 10 marathons in 10 days started on Thursday with several Halstead Road Runners taking part in one or more of the races. Full results to follow next week. One update from John Warne who has so far run on 3 consecutive days doing the Wickhambrook Marathon on Thursday in 4 hours 47 minutes, Thetford Marathon on Friday in 4 hours 46 minutes and Kirtling Marathon on Saturday in 4 hours 44 minutes.

On Sunday John opted to give his legs a bit of a break choosing to do the Stort 10 mile race crossing the line in 1 hour 27 minutes. Finishing just 30 seconds behind Warne was Richard Tiller.

Stort also offered a 5 mile option. Rachael Roughan was 3rd lady in a time of 36.41 and was presented her trophy by former professional boxer Frank Bruno. Mel Candler also did the 5 mile finishing in 38.58.

Elsewhere it was the Brentwood 10k which was this year’s Essex 10k Championship race. The event was hosted by Thrift Green Trotters who were celebrating their 30th birthday. There were great personal bests set by Wes Atkins who was first back for the Road Runners in 38.02, Andy Owen in 39.49 and Jon Greenley who knocked an impressive 5 minutes off his previous best to finish in 40.50. Nicole Smith was the only female competing for the club and finished in 52.12. Phil Jeffries and Anthony Denton ran their first official race in Halstead colours finishing in 55.44 and 57.10 respectively.
